A Jaffa Cake The Musical-Edinburgh Fringe 2025.

A Jaffa Cake the Musical returns to the Edinburgh Fringe for the 2025 season after a hugely successful run last year.

Is a Jaffa Cake a biscuit or a cake? That debate has gone on for many years and I am not sure everyone will agree on what status the Jaffa Cake falls under. Personally, they never last long enough in my house to discuss it.

In 1991 a VAT case saw McVities in court to argue the case that Jaffa Cakes for the purpose of not paying tax are a cake rather than a biscuit due to their ingredients.

What an ideal subject to create a musical into! The two law firms take to the stage to put forward their cases through music to argue which heading a Jaffa Cake falls under. No spoiler alert that it was declared to be a cake in the 1991 case.

However, the outcome is not necessarily the important part of the Musical. It is the title that is fun and will draw audiences in to watch it. As a large majority of people will know what a Jaffa cake is without much explanation and will have heard the cake versus biscuit debate.

The Musical is an entertaining and energetic family show for all ages. Not many shows at The Edinburgh Fringe fit that particular criteria. Although, I would urge you to buy tickets in advance as the Musical often sells out and the performance I was in was a completely full house.

Inspired by the 1991 tribunal which determined the true identity of a Jaffa Cake, multi award-winning family-friendly musical makers Gigglemug Theatre (Scouts! The Musical, RuneSical, Timpson: The Musical) return to the Fringe with their latest sell-out smash-hit comedy that really takes the biscuit (or cake?).
