Seating Plan offers a rom-com style two-hander play Seating Plan Mavis (Izzy Radford) and David (George Airey) meet at a friend’s party although you always know where you are in a friend’s pecking order by where they sit you at a party.
Mavis and David are placed the furthest away from the couple and only have each other for company. Although their first encounter doesn’t work out very well and are glad when the evening ends.
Over the next couple of years, the two keep meeting up at the annual birthday celebrations. They attempt to tolerate one another and there’s a hint of chemistry between them although as the years pass other relationships come between them.
The costumes change outfits are all hanging on coat hangers at the back of the stage. It looks very effective and when I first saw the hanger’s silhouette through the muslin curtain I was intrigued at how these would be incorporated into the play. I haven’t seen this technique used before and it worked well.
It’s an entertaining rom-com, Radford and Airey work well together on stage. Breaking the fourth wall occasionally to talk to other guests at the party also known as the “audience members” works effectively.
