Joann Condon-Edinburgh Fringe 2025-Part of July Challenge.

Before the Edinburgh Fringe madness takes hold I have caught up with  Joann Condon (Little Britain) to talk about her Edinburgh Fringe show Little Boxes.

Where did the inspiration or ideas come from for your show/production?

We’re all put in ‘little boxes’ at some time or another during our lives.  As I’ve grown older (and wiser) I realised I needed to address my own boxes in order to set an example for my children to be who ever they want to be.  Also, I hadn’t had much work in a while so this inspired me to create my own show, where I get to be the lead.

What do you plan on doing to relax and get some “time out” during the Fringe?

I first performed at Edinburgh Fringe back in the 1990s and in order to unwind (and get away from a house load of other performers) I’d head off to Portobello beach. It’s only a bus ride away, and sticking my feet in the water and grabbing a strawberry ice-cream is the perfect way to chill.

How do you deal with stage nerves before each performance, if you have them?

I do get stage nerves, and actually worry if I don’t have them – it’s all adrenalin and anticipation. I like to have a ‘diva moment’ – ideally 30 minutes, but even five will do; sit quietly, have a cuppa and ask myself, ‘why the hell am I doing this again?’

Favourite and worse thing about performing?

I’ve been an actor since I was 21 and I love it. Most of my career has been in TV which is great, especially as you can do multiple takes and really perfect your performance on the day.  But in live theatre you get that immediate response, it’s very satisfying. I love engaging with the audience, hearing their reactions, they are part of the show. Every audience is different so every performance is different, which keeps it fresh. The worst thing about performing is when there is no audience – so please come and help make the show great.

In one sentence why should someone come to see your show?

Little Boxes has had great reactions across the UK and Australia because it’s a story for everyone – you’ll laugh, you’ll cry and leave inspired and I want you to share my journey.
