Laurie Magers is all set to make her debut at the Edinburgh Fringe this year and I have caught up with her to find out what’s in store for audiences.

Is this your first time at Edinburgh Fringe?
Yes, this is my first time! It’s been a goal of mine for a while, and I’m both excited and terrified.
How long have you been preparing your show for Edinburgh?
I’ve been preparing my show for about a year. But before that, I took a year to research other solo shows and make a game plan for mine. Then I took about 6 months to write it, and have been polishing and tweaking for the last year. The work never stops!
What is your motivation to perform there?
Edinburgh Fringe is a bucket list item for so many artists and I definitely want to check it off my list. I also believe that my show is sort of made for this festival. I want to share this thing I’ve made with people and like-minded creatives outside of my own little community and see how far its reach can really extend.
What have you done to prepare for the Edinburgh Fringe, emotionally and physically?
Well I’m definitely in therapy so I’ve been talking my therapist’s ear off about all of the anxiety, paranoia and fear I have of course. I’m sure she loves that! I’ve also been trying to pat myself on the back more and remind myself of all the accomplishments I’ve achieved in my career so far to get ahead of the inevitable moments I’ll be questioning my abilites. Physically, I’ve been working with a physical trainer to get my endurance up for the festival. My show is quite exhausting and I’ve never done it more than one day in a row. I’ve also been trying to exercise and lubricate my vocal chords every chance I get.
Have you had any advice from other’s who have performed at the Fringe?
People tell me to temper my expectations and be ready for crash out in the middle. And also to really commit to flyering and grow a thick skin for rejection. I live in LA so I think I’m ahead of the curve on the rejection bit.
Have you visited Scotland or Edinburgh before?
Yes, I’ve been to Edinburgh on vacation and I loved it! I heard all about how the city changes during the festival and I’m eager to see it in real time.
How have you found booking accommodation?
I have! A good friend of mine is also putting up a show at the festival so we are sharing a rental. Another piece of advice I got was to find accommodations early and I am SO glad we did.
What plans do you have for your show after the Edinburgh Fringe is over?
I definitely want to do my show in other cities like London and New York. But my ultimate goal is to package the show for TV development. I work in TV so I know that selling a show is incredibly easy and not competitive at all!
