Pioneering Bi-Lingual Show Blending BSL and English: “DREGS” Premieres This Edinburgh Fringe.
Written and Performed by Emery Hunter and Bobby Bradley
Her world split in two. Not half. Whole. Both.
Folklore gets f*cked up and mythology spills from every stale pint in this pioneering new show, blending narrative theatre with visual storytelling. A selkie, creature of legend, is stranded on land and when she collides with a stranger completely out of his depth, they weave through a chaotic Saturday night in Glasgow to help get her back into the water.
Part folklore, part coming-of-age tale, DREGS weaves spoken word, visual storytelling, and movement into an unforgettable experience that speaks to both D/deaf and hearing audiences. A quick search of the Fringe programme in Edinburgh this August shows that DREGS is only one of 25 shows to include BSL. At less than 1% of the 3000 shows on offer opportunities for Deaf audiences to experience theatre are as rare as a selkie sighting.
Hunter is a Hard of Hearing writer and performer with a focus on challenging how access, and specifically the use of British Sign Language, is presented in mainstream theatre. DREGS continues the growing movement towards radically accessible theatre that doesn’t just include D/deaf audiences — it centres them.
Bradley is a Glasgow based actor and theatre maker who thrives in presenting innovative and original stories. From site specific and found spaces to large scale stages at the National Theatre or Donmar Warehouse, his work seeks to connect audiences through narrative and create lasting impact.
“This isn’t just about a selkie losing her skin. It’s about losing your connection to your yourself and to your community. And how you can find it again on your own terms.”
