Sam Hume chatted to me ahead of the Edinburgh Fringe about the two magic shows the Australian company are returning to the Festival with this August.

When were you last performing at the Edinburgh Fringe?
We were last at the Fringe in 2024, when we brought The Greatest Magic Show, Adults Only Magic Show, and CIRCUS • The Show. We’ve been coming every year since 2019, except for 2020 and 2021 due to COVID, so last year marked our return in full force. With the most shows we have ever done over the month – however we plan to up that this year with 4 different productions performing every day during Fringe!
What was the name of your previous show?
Our previous new addition in 2024 was CIRCUS: The Show, which joined our existing line-up alongside The Greatest Magic Show and Adults Only Magic Show. This year, we’re thrilled to be debuting Explosive Science Show, bringing our total to four productions at the Fringe this year.
How long has your current show been running for?
The Greatest Magic Show has been touring since 2018, and we’ve continued to expand our line-up over the years. Justin and I have actually been working together since 2012, so these shows are the result of over a decade of collaboration.

Do you have any “good luck” rituals you undertake before performing?
Absolutely! We’ve got a little pre-show ritual we never miss — including secret handshakes just before we hit the stage. It keeps the energy up and gets everyone in sync. It’s a fun tradition that brings the team together before every performance.
How have you found booking accommodation this year?
Booking accommodation has definitely been a bit of a challenge this year — cost and availability were tricky. But we were lucky enough to lock in a great place that has five bedrooms and is within walking distance of our venue, which is a huge bonus with our full team in town.
What three pieces of advice would you give to first-timers going to the Fringe?
- Pace yourself – It’s a marathon, not a sprint! Don’t burn out in the first week.
- Network and explore – Make time to see other shows and connect with other artists. The community is one of the best parts of the Fringe.
- Be prepared for anything – Flexibility is key. Tech glitches, weather, or last-minute changes happen — keep a good attitude and roll with it.
What are you plans after the Edinburgh Fringe is over?
After the Fringe wraps up, I’m heading to Italy for a couple of weeks to visit family and take a proper break — and eat as much pizza, pasta, and gelato as humanly possible. After that, it’s back to Australia to gear up for our seasons in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, and Adelaide.
