The play “Down to Chance is a heartwarming portrait of a community in crisis with the whole world listening in” and is based on a true story. I have caught up with the theatre company Maybe You Like It before they head up to the Edinburgh Fringe next week.

What’s your show called for Edinburgh Fringe 2025?

Down to Chance

How long have you been doing the Edinburgh Fringe?

We’re Edinburgh Fringe lovers! Maybe You Like It began at Edinburgh Fringe in 2019 with our debut show Redacted Arachnid (frantic comedy about the failed Spiderman Broadway musical), so we feel very at home here every summer.

We are very excited to be back for our third consecutive Edinburgh Fringe, this year in partnership with Theatre Royal Plymouth and The Pleasance as one of the Edinburgh National Partnership shows. We love The Pleasance – particularly the buzz in the Courtyard every day!

How do you cope with the overwhelming chaos that the Fringe brings?

Walks round The Meadows and up Arthurs’ Seat for some headspace.

Wraps from Nile Valley Cafe always soothe the soul (we would live here if we could).

Trips to the beach in Portobello.

And remembering that you’re doing great!

What sort of shows will you see if you have time?

We love anything funny, fast-paced, and wacky.

After catching a glimpse at the Charlie Hartill Finals, we’re very excited for The Unstoppable Rise of Ben Manager by BUNKUM ENSEMBLE – laugh-out-loud funny, with live music and brilliant puppetry. We also can’t wait to see what Will BF has done with his updated sprawling space-opera-sketch-epic Moon Team IIIV

Have you performed at any other Fringe’s? If so, which has been your favourite so far?

We have performed at three other Fringes: 2019 (Redacted Arachnid), 2023 (Pleading Stupidity), and 2024 (Sorry (I Broke Your Arms and Legs)). We have loved every year but 2023 felt really special – it was our first year at The Pleasance, our first year as a professional company, and our first year back after the pandemic.

Any advice to newbies about flyering?

The best possible opener when flyering is “can I tell you about a show?” – that way, if they say yes you can give them the best pitch possible and if they say no they weren’t going to come to your show anyway, but at least you didn’t give them the whole spiel first! Be bold, fine-tune your pitch, work on a hook, and listen to how people respond to the way you pitch – by the end of August, you’ll just about have worked out how to sell your show.

What are your plans for the show after the Edinburgh Fringe?

Having toured our last two Edinburgh Fringe shows, we can’t wait to get back out on the road. We’re planning to tour Down to Chance in 2026 – watch this space!
