Hannah Caplan talks to me about taking her debut play to the Edinburgh Fringe this August.
What’s your show called for Edinburgh Fringe 2025?
THIS IS NOT ABOUT ME.
How long have you been doing the Edinburgh Fringe?
This is my first time bringing a show to Edinburgh Fringe and I’m super excited and super scared to discover what the festival holds.
How do you cope with the overwhelming chaos that the Fringe brings?
We love and thrive in chaos, but for when it gets overwhelming Summerhall have been very supportive on all aspects, with advice and healing. Our team has been assembled of those most equipped to help when things get too much.
What sort of shows will you see if you have time?
I’m interested by things that cross-genres, comedies that make me cry, dramas that make me laugh like Single News at Pleasance. I was lucky enough to see a WIP version of Sam Nicoresti’s new show Baby Doomer and they are a genius. I think the general programming at summerhall is incredibly strong this year, especially the push towards immersive stuff which reflects our own show, like Darkfield’s offering.
Have you performed at any other Fringe’s? If so, which has been your favourite so far?
Our associate producer is hot off Peckham Fringe with Wiggy by Chelsea Bondzanga, it was a beautiful baptism of fire, it taught her the joy and resilience of theatre.
Any advice to newbies about flyering?
Be wary of papercuts. In other words, none.
What are your plans for the show after the Edinburgh Fringe?
Our company is obsessed with new writers. We are very keen to platform and facilitate Hannah Caplan’s work, and let it be a starting point of a pipeline for early career creatives. We have partners in “found space” locations and we are keen for the future life of this show to be multi-media, multi-disciplinary and with an immersive heart.
