International children’s author Kate O’Hearn is excited to bring her show to the Edinburgh Fringe this August. I have caught up with Kate just before heading off to the mayhem of the Festival.
The Caterpillar and the Blackbird. Daily from August 1 – 9th at 12:10 – 1:10pm at The Grand Theatre: Surgeon’s Hall
Where did the inspiration or ideas come from:
As a bestselling children’s author, several years ago I was asked to write a short story for a charity book on literacy. But the stories had to be exactly 366 words long. Several years later, Tom Dwyer, a West End star, director and choreographer – and also a great friend, read the story and though it would make an excellent show. From there it grew into the Caterpillar and the Blackbird. I wrote the revised script and Tom has done an amazing job with directing and choreographing the show.
What do you plan on doing for to relax and get some ‘time out’ during the Fringe
Our entire acting company is planning on seeing shows, doing some sightseeing and sharing in the whole Fringe experience.
How do you deal with stage nerves before each performance, if you have them?
Our company give hugs to each other and sing right before going on stage.
Where are you staying during the Fringe? Did you find accommodation quite easily?
As there are 10 of us with Caterpillar, we booked two caravans at Haven – they are by the sea and that’s going to be amazing! We booked them right after we booked our theatre.
What obstacles have you faced preparing for the Edinburgh Fringe this year?
As this is our first Fringe, we haven’t encountered obstacles so much as challenges as it’s all a learning curve. But everyone we’ve contacted for help or information has been amazing. This is such a unique event and experience!
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
There have been two. The first is having my Pegasus book series optioned for a Hollywood film, and the second is seeing my 366 word short story being adapted for the stage and working with Tom Dwyer and seeing his vision coming to life – and bringing it to the Fringe!
Why did you decide to the Venue you are using?
That was Tom Dwyer’s idea as a touring stage actor, he knew it and thought it would be perfect for our show. I think he was right!
Favourite and worse thing about performing?
My favourite part is the moment you hear the first, genuine laugh or see smiles on the faces of the audience. The worst part is at the 10-minute mark before the start of the show.
In one sentence why should someone come to see your show?
Come along for a feel good show that will have you cheering, singing and dancing with a story that will leave you inspired!
Name one other show that you plan on seeing at the Fringe.
There are so many we want to see. But one I absolutely plan on is :The Best of Canada comedy show.
Where are you taking your show next?
I’m not sure as I have a book to get written before January. My partner Tom is looking at our options!
