In the final week of interviews, Patrick McPherson joins me to talk about his Edinburgh Fringe show Scatter.

What’s your show called for Edinburgh Fringe 2025?

It’s called Scatter. It’s a horror play – jump scares, creepy forests, a demon or two.

How long have you been doing the Edinburgh Fringe?

My first fringe was in 2018. This year will be my sixth festival. Very excited indeed.

How do you cope with the overwhelming chaos that the Fringe brings?

Cheesy chips and gravy, random late night free fringe show, long walks, diet coke in cowgate when the rain stops, not checking reviews, flyering on the mile, pizza van in George Square, eventually checking reviews if they’re good.

What sort of shows will you see if you have time?

I love watching sketch shows, have always been in and around sketch. Otherwise other horror, or anything dark and/or psychologically complex. Also a big believer in seeing all the other shows in my venue.

Have you performed at any other Fringe’s? If so, which has been your favourite so far?

Brighton and Perth are my favourites. Perth is just gloriously, often-maddeningly hot and sunny, and then Brighton has a really great vibe, and is a great city. And both, unlike Edinburgh, offer a beach.

Any advice to newbies about flyering?

So tempting to think it doesn’t matter but it absolutely does. Stay in the same spot, dedicate a bunch of time, lead with the best sell for the show, rather than anything rambling or too specific.

What are your plans for the show after the Edinburgh Fringe?

A London transfer, and then who knows. We’ll see if Edinburgh likes our spooky tale, and then the sky’s the limit.
