American stand-up comedian and actor Gianmarco Soresi has taken some time out to talk to me ahead of taking his show to the Edinburgh Fringe.
Is this your first time at Edinburgh Fringe?
It is! I’ve done the New York City Fringe, which I imagine is similar to some degree albeit much more expensive for me to get to. But I was 22 when I did that and now I’m 36 so we’ll see how my body manages.
How long have you been preparing your show for Edinburgh?
I’ll be doing stand-up so it feels like I’ve been preparing this show since I started back in 2016 or, if you want to talk about the trauma that inspired it, since 1988.
What is your motivation to perform there?
I’ve always loved performing stand-up comedy at night but now I get to find out what it feels like at 3PM. Or 15PM? Not sure how you guys do it over there.
What have you done to prepare for the Edinburgh Fringe, emotionally and physically?
I live my life on the road, often doing two shows a night, so honestly doing one show a day in the same place for a week is kind of a vacation. Although my girlfriend says we don’t get to count this as this year’s vacation so maybe my understanding of basic life things is off.
Have you had any advice from other’s who have performed at the Fringe?
I was told that going for a month is a bit too much when you’re in your mid-30’s. So I’m doing a week. I was also told that 3PM is actually a good time slot to do my show because audiences are only somewhat drunk by then.
Have you visited Scotland or Edinburgh before?
I got to do a couple headlining shows last year at Monkey Barrel and I remember thinking “Wow! These streets are way too narrow. I would hate to have to navigate this during the Fringe Festival.”
How have you found booking accommodation?
I have a travel agent who swears he’ll have figured it out by the time I land.
What plans do you have for your show after the Edinburgh Fringe is over?
I will continue schlepping my jokes across America and Canada with plans to do an Australia to Japan to India run shortly thereafter.
