Michael Debarto has taken time out to chat to me about his upcoming show at the 2025 Edinburgh Fringe.

What’s your show called for Edinburgh Fringe 2025?

Tell Me Where Home Is (I’m Starting To Forget)

How long have you been doing the Edinburgh Fringe?

I’m an Edinburgh Fringe virgin, so naturally I am deliciously excited but also very much shitting in my pants!

How do you cope with the overwhelming chaos that the Fringe brings?

I’m staying with a lovely couple about 20 minutes outside the city center, which means I’ll have a cozy little sanctuary when the Fringe chaos starts to feel like too much. As someone with an anxiety disorder (layered over what I lovingly call generalized gay panic), I’ll definitely be taking intentional breathers. Oh, and Klonopin.

What sort of shows will you see if you have time?

I really want to support other solo artists, especially LGBTQ+ artists who are putting daring, personal work onstage. The political climate in the U.S. is filled with ignorance and growing hostility — particularly toward the trans community — and that makes visibility and storytelling more urgent than ever.

I know how terrifying it is to stand alone onstage and tell the truth. So if someone’s doing that with courage and heart, I want to be there. I want to witness it. And I want to cheer them on.

Have you performed at any other Fringe’s? If so, which has been your favourite so far?

Yes! I performed at the NYC Fringe a number of years ago in The American Play, which was selected as part of the Fringe Encore Series at Soho Playhouse. It remains one of my favorite projects — the kind of show that pushed me artistically and personally. Even better, I met one of my best friends doing it.

Any advice to newbies about flyering?

Boy, would I like to know!

What are your plans for the show after the Edinburgh Fringe?

I’d love to bring the show to NYC, regional theaters, universities — any place where stories like this can be felt and shared. I truly believe this show has a life beyond Fringe. It’s not just a performance; it’s a conversation about identity, healing, and finding home, and I’m excited to keep that conversation going wherever it can reach.
