Parker Callahan-Edinburgh Fringe 2025-Part of July Challenge.

Parker Callahan is preparing for his first time performing at the Edinburgh Fringe this year. I have caught up with Parker before the chaos of the fringe starts.

Is this your first time at the Edinburgh Fringe?

Yes!

How long have you been preparing your show for Edinburgh?

I’ve been working on Soda Pop for just over a year, but the style of the show has taken much longer to develop. It’s a mix of stand-up, music, video, and character stuff- kind of a hybrid I’ve been slowly building over the past several years. I didn’t set out to make something this specific, but over time it became clear that this is how my brain likes to tell jokes.

What is your motivation to perform there?

This is basically the Olympics of performance, and since I’ll never make it to the actual Olympics, this feels like a solid alternative. It’s the ultimate challenge as a performer! I’m curious to see how my work lands with an international audience, how I hold up under the pressure, and honestly, I’m just really excited to be surrounded by all the other freaks who’ve also decided to do this.

What have you done to prepare for the Edinburgh Fringe, emotionally and physically?

Well, I do perform the show in a Speedo, so I’m doing everything I can to keep my ass perky and my knockers taut. The show is pretty physically explosive, so to build stamina, I’ve been dancing at the club like it’s my job and chain smoking on the treadmill to simulate the exhaustion of live theater. Emotionally- I’m compartmentalizing in a way that can only be described as “ill advised” by my “therapist.”

Have you had any advice from other’s who have performed at the Fringe?

DO NOT HIKE ARTHUR’S SEAT THE FIRST DAY BECAUSE YOU WILL SPRAIN YOUR ANKLE AND IT WILL RUIN EVERYTHING. This advice came from a good friend who hiked Arthur’s Seat on their first day and sprained their ankle. Other than that; Scottish people will drink you under the table so don’t try to keep up.

Have you visited Scotland or Edinburgh before?

I have! When I was 17, I visited with my dad and sister as we’re proud Scottish descendants (Clan Cameron in the HOUSEEEE!). I have such fond memories of Edinburgh, especially a ghost tour through Greyfriars Kirkyard where they had hired someone to jump out and scare you while inside a crypt. THAT’S theatre, baby.

How have you found booking accommodation?

I have! I’ll be reliving my college years in the dorms of the University of Edinburgh.

What plans do you have for your show after the Edinburgh Fringe is over?

Soda Pop will go on a US tour after the festival, where I hope to continue to expand and perfect it!
