Ali Brice is no stranger to the Edinburgh Fringe and is returning this year with the intriguingly titled show Eric Meat Gets the Chop.
When were you last performing at the Edinburgh Fringe?
2023. But I only did a week and decided it has to be all or nothing. In 2022, I got nominated for Best Show in the Comedians’ Choice Award, which was nice.
Apart from 2024 and The COVID Years, I’ve been to the Fringe every year since 2010. I love it. And I am so happy to be back.
What was the name of your previous show?
2010: The Very Best of Brice, Stephenson and Larter
2011: Brice/Stephenson
2012: Visual Aids
2013: Plumpy’Nut
2014: Eric Meat Wants to Go Shopping
2015: Eric Meat Has No Proof, Only Memories of Pasta
2016: Home Is Where Eric Meat Is
2017: Never-Ending Pencil
2018: Ali Brice’s Lemonade Stand
2019: Bin Wondering
2022: I Tried To Be Funny, But You Weren’t Looking
2023: Work In Progress
2025: Eric Meat Gets the Chop
How long has your current show been running for?
It hasn’t been running. But it’s been in development since February, or for the whole of my life so far. Depending on your perspective.
Do you have any “good luck” rituals you undertake before performing?
I clench my buttocks and tell myself it doesn’t matter, just have fun. I also yawn a lot – but that’s an involuntary reaction to incredible nerves.
I also just try to feel as silly as possible.
How have you found booking accommodation this year?
I found it easy. I have booked through the same person 10 out of the 13 times I’ve been to the Fringe and stayed in student halls. In 2010, a 4-bed flat cost £1,700 for 3 weeks. In 2025 a 5-bed flat is costing £5,865.
So booking it is easy, affording it is hard.
What three pieces of advice would you give to first-timers going to the Fringe?
Have fun. Make friends. Take it seriously (but only if you want to, although it’s probably best to. That’s coming from someone who didn’t and regrets it).
What are your plans after the Edinburgh Fringe is over?
Go back to the Fringe in 2026.
Please feel free to add anything else you would like to include. Please pass on any links you would like added at the end of the interview.
See my show, please. But also see: Andy Barr, Pat Cahill, Lucy Pearman, Luke Rollason, Sam Nicoresti, Sooz Kempner, Dave Bibby, Nate Kitch and Harber Portentum.
Lastly, if anyone has any NOFX vinyl they’d like to sell me, please get in touch.
