Alex Stringer is performing at the Edinburgh Fringe for the first time this year after attending for years as an audience member.
Is this your first time at Edinburgh Fringe?
No, I’ve been coming as a punter for ten years and was in a one act play ten ish years ago, but have never done the full month. I can’t wait!
How long have you been preparing your show for Edinburgh?
Since the womb. Truthfully, in reality, 18 months since I started doing some work in progresses slowly, but it’s been in the back of my mind since starting stand up 6 years ago. My show is about me getting sober at 23 and my life since then learning who I am. I felt that there had been Edinburgh Fringe shows about being a mess in active addiction but not many that look at the messiness of early sobriety and learning who you are so it’s a story I’m excited to share!
What is your motivation to perform there?
I’ve heard Arthur’s Seat is a doozy. Nah, I’ve always wanted to do an hour long fringe show since starting stand up so it’s the dream! Also, my show is about me getting sober so if people reflect on their drinking too, then I think that’s only ever a good thing.
What have you done to prepare for the Edinburgh Fringe, emotionally and physically?
Physically, lots of dumbbells which should help with putting the microphone to my mouth. Otherwise, sweet Fanny Adams! But I do lots of walking day to day which should keep me in good stead! I hope. Emotionally, being honest about where I’m at, where my head is at and asking for help! A biggie! That, and I’m going to see if my producer will agree to funding an emotional support animal for me. Just a capybara or something, nothing too major.
Have you had any advice from other’s who have performed at the Fringe?
To move to Edinburgh year round just for the August accommodation. That or get a Scottish Sugar Daddy. They said, it’s a marathon not a sprint so be kind to yourself! Also, enjoy it, you’re doing it because you love doing it, so have fun.
Have you visited Scotland or Edinburgh before?
Yes! I’ve been to Edinburgh Fringe as a punter for the last ten years so I’m super excited to return. I’ve also been lucky enough to go to Glasgow a few times & Dumfries before. Love the Scots!
How have you found booking accommodation?
My bank account wasn’t a fan! A friend found us somewhere for the best deal we could find, in Musselburgh, by the sea which means a small commute but I think the sea air will do us wonders! Or can walk into it after a particularly bad show, whatever works.
What plans do you have for your show after the Edinburgh Fringe is over?
World domination, please. A tour would suffice.
