In the run-up to the Edinburgh Fringe, I have caught up with the comedian Hal Cruttenden.

When were you last performing at the Edinburgh Fringe?

I was last at the Fringe in 2023.

What was the name of your previous show?

My previous show was called ‘It’s Best You Hear It From Me.’

How long has your current show been running for?

The show debuts at the Fringe. It’s called ‘Hal Cruttenden Can Dish It Out But Can’t Take It’.

Do you have any “good luck” rituals you undertake before performing?

Before a big tour show, pop stars and rock bands have a group hug and maybe say a prayer. I’m a stand up so I just hug myself and cry.

How have you found booking accommodation this year?

I’m lucky in that I stay in the same place every year that is rented out by someone with a moral core. Many landlords in Edinburgh wouldn’t recognise what that is.

What three pieces of advice would you give to first-timers going to the Fringe?

1. Unless you have to, don’t read reviews. They are one person’s opinion and, whether they’re good or bad, they will get in your head and affect your performance.

2. Try to have a day off if you can and get out of the city. It’s important to remember that, while it feels like the centre of the entertainment world while you’re there, most people outside Edinburgh hardly know it’s on.

3. Put everything into your show. It’s going to be the one thing that keeps you sane during a mad month. If you believe in your show, it will get you through the whole thing without too much psychological damage. Many people make you think it’s all about schmoozing, going to showbiz parties and being seen by the right people. If your show is good enough, they’ll find you.

What are you plans after the Edinburgh Fringe is over?
