Remember That Time? A Musical by Annmarie Cullen

What’s your show called at Edinburgh Fringe 2025 and what is it about?

Remember That Time? A Musical is an award-winning one-woman musical about loss, change and resilience. It’s uplifting, funny, and moving. You’ll laugh a bit, cry a bit (maybe), and you might even sing along. It incorporates mixed-media as well, so there’s plenty of variety. And because it’s an early show, you can still make it to lunch after (a win!).

What is the history of your show? Has it been performed anywhere else before coming to Edinburgh?

Yes! The show premiered at the International Dublin Gay Theatre Festival in 2024, where I was honoured to win Best Performance. It’s a deeply personal piece, and I’ve been blown away by how audiences have connected with it.

Is it your first time at the Edinburgh Fringe?

Performing, yes, but I went for a weekend last year and completely fell in love with the vibe and the heaving creative energy of the place. It’s amazing to be surrounded by such a huge tribe of performers.

There are over 3,500 shows performing — how do you think you’ll cope with the overwhelming chaos of the Fringe?

I’m going to dive in and embrace it! I feel so lucky to be part of it this year, and I want to smell the roses and immerse myself in every second of it. That said, come talk to me in week 3 and I’ll let you know if I was blinded by my innocence!

What sort of other shows will you see if you have time? Has anything caught your eye from the programme?

I’m excited to see as MANY as I can from all genres!.  My show is on at lunch time, so that may help my case.I’m looking forward to catching my friend Gearóid Farrelly’s work-in-progress comedy show. He’s one of my favourite comics (and human beings) and even makes an on-screen cameo in my show. I recently saw a warm-up for Rosie O’Donnell’s new show in Dublin and I want to go and see that again with a full production. I’ll also be checking out my fellow Irish women Katie Boyle and Aoife Dunne who are also performing at the festival with their respective shows

Any thoughts about how you will flyer people?

I’m a newbie, but I’ve heard that personal connections are the key (i.e. trying to have quick conversations with people rather than just handing out flyers). Try to sum up your show and why they should see it in one or two punchy lines. I’ll be doing all my flyering and hoping to meet some lovely folks along the way.

Do you have any “good luck” rituals before performing?

Nothing too dramatic…I do a 15-minute vocal warm-up and take a few quiet minutes to centre myself before going on. That’s usually enough to get me in the zone.

How have you found booking accommodation?

I booked early and managed to find a small apartment, which I’m grateful for.  Loads of friends from Ireland and LA (where I lived for 20 years) are coming to visit, so the place will be full of chat, jet lag, and people crashing on couches. I’ve never been more popular.

What three pieces of advice would you give to first-timers going to the Fringe?

I’m a first-timer myself, but here’s what I’m telling myself:

  1. Enjoy the experience, it’s a big deal just being here. Simon Cowell once said (and i’m paraphrasing), “the fun part is the journey to success…not the actual success”. I’ve never done 21 shows back to back, so I’m looking forward to that creative experience (and the chaos in between).
  2. No matter how it goes, be proud of yourself that you followed through, finished a show and took it to Fringe!

  3. Take the time to recharge if you need it.  Even if that means missing out on some events, etc.   I’ve heard that the experience can be gruelling, so I’m going to try and get my Zzz’s in.

Have you performed at any other Fringes? If so, which has been your favourite so far?

Sort of! I was awarded an “Artist at Work” development bursary from Dublin Fringe in 2022 for Remember That Time? A Musical.  Dublin Fringe also provided me with a venue to rehearse and develop my show during the festival, but I didn’t perform the show publicly. In addition, I had a feature in their programme which was very cool.  I’ve been to both the Dublin and Edinburgh Fringes. They are very different from each other, but both are brilliant and special in their ways.

What are your plans for the show after the Edinburgh Fringe?

I’d love to tour it around the UK and beyond… and hopefully bring it to LA Fringe next year. My ultimate dream is to adapt Remember That Time? A Musical is turned into a feature film.
