What’s your show called for Edinburgh Fringe 2025?
This year’s subtitle for NewsRevue is The Fiasco 4, a pun on this year’s The Fantastic Four Marvel movie and the theme of our parodied publicity.
How long have you been doing the Edinburgh Fringe?
A while…producing NewsRevue since 2001 and performing first back in 1999.
How do you cope with the overwhelming chaos that the Fringe brings?
Ha. I’ve convinced myself that out of chaos comes order. Who am I kidding? Clearly Fringe addicts thrive on chaos. The buzz, electrifying energy and the sense of anticipation make it the best place on the planet to be every August.
What sort of shows will see if you have time?
I’m blessed that having been Artistic Director of Canal Café Theatre/NewsRevue producer since 2001 so many artists that have trodden our boards over the years bring shows to the Fringe so I’m always spoilt for choice. Last year I brought, MA, A One Woman Show to the Fringe too and I became part of a Solo Support Group which did exactly what it said on the tin. We really did our best to go and see each other’s shows and I’ll do the same this year. Off the back of that I’ve been invited by Soness Stevens, an American woman based in Tokyo who was the voice of Hello Kitty for two decades to feature as part of her new show Anime-Zing! It’s a live gameshow where voice actors dub live with different guests each day.

Have you performed at any other Fringe’s?
Shockingly, no. That said, MAN, A One Woman Show has just been accepted onto a curated Fringe later this year but I’m not allowed to announce it yet!
If so which has been your favourite so far?
I like to visit Brighton Fringe and I was very tempted to take part in the Scarborough Fringe headed up by former Brighton director Julian Caddy and incidentally my old drama school friend.
Any advice to newbies about flyering?
Pace yourself. Have a strategy and a rota if you’re part of a team. Be discerning. I always ask, “Are you here to see shows?” before shoving a flier into people’s hands. If they are, I have a carefully rehearsed spiel covering as many bases in as short a time as possible. It’s great when you see people you’ve flown to at your show. It works. If you’re a solo performer make it part of your budget, if possible, to get a flyer to flyer for an hour before your show. It can make a world of difference. Last year, I chose my flyers because I really liked the way he sold me on someone else’s show and luckily he had availability. And/or buddy up with someone. You need to look after your voice and be focused on your show before you go on stage. You can’t do everything by yourself!
What are your plans for the show after the Edinburgh Fringe?
We sign up for the post-fringe edfringe marketplace and we let producers know, for the right deal, we are interested in taking the show elsewhere. We have a London version of the show that continues to run at our https://canalcafetheatre.com throughout August and since we re-cast the show every six weeks, NewsRevue is the wheel that keeps on turning.
