Four Weigh-ins and a Funeral by Emma Burnell.

Four Weigh-ins and a Funeral is set predominantly during the Slimming World weigh-in classes. The writer and director Emma Burnell has based the play on her weight-loss journey. Focusing on the support and kindness that she found and continues to have within her own Slimming World group.

The cast of five initially appears to have very different lives. However, they all share the same goal. Losing weight and feeling more confident in their appearance, and improving their health. Although their friendship is tested when one of the class members becomes seriously ill.

The title offers the audience insight into what happens during the play. The one thing I took away from the play is how supportive and thoughtful the ladies were to one another, regardless of whether they had lost a pound or gained a pound. The main thing was that they continued on the weight-loss journey and didn’t become disheartened if they put a pound on.

Within the play, there are references to Slimming World words like “sins” referring to certain foods. These didn’t mean much to me, but I have since read up on them to understand what they mean.

Four Weigh-ins and a Funeral is ultimately a play about what we can achieve when we have a close-knit group of strangers who become friends and are there to support one another, even in our darkest hours.

I don’t believe that this was the end of their journey, and there’s a sequel waiting to be written to see where the group of friends go next.
