Agents of Chaos Acting Company presents their debut play Fool’s Gold by Malcolm Webb. Baron’s Court Theatre is an ideal venue for the play with various side exits to offer escape areas during some of the chase scenes during the play.
Who knew that covert excavation (grave robbing) for treasure was still a recognised career, nope neither did I. David (Ben Whittle) keeps unsociable hours and at 3 am he starts looking for his latest treasure although he isn’t quite sure what it is.
His usual assistant Johnny (Edd Pullen) appears to be indisposed and a newbie assistant (Malcolm Webb) has been sent by his boss Tony to help him complete tonight’s job in the graveyard. Although for an assistant he seems to know another about David!
Runner (CJ Jones) is a fitness fan who is in training for a marathon and uses the graveyard during his training. He certainly wasn’t expecting to see David and his assistant there “working” at 3 am also known as The Witching Hour.
Fool’s Gold contains some very sharp comedy one-liners. It has the right ingredients that dark comedy requires. However, it would benefit from editing to pull the comedy together tighter and lose some of the repeated and extended dialogue, especially in the beginning. In the play’s current format, the storyline drags slightly and doesn’t do the play the justice it deserves.
The cast of four have a strong working relationship on stage and pulled off the Take That routine for the final applause with ease. I would like to see the play again in a polished version where it’s reduced to about sixty to sixty-five minutes.
