&Juliet-New Wimbledon Theatre.

In fair Verona (Wimbledon), we lay our scene… a musical based on the “What If…” Juliet didn’t kill herself, but rather, chose to live her life, travel the world, make friends and even potentially think about marrying (again?). This jukebox musical is filled with pop classics – from Britney Spears to Katy Perry and that classic banger from The Backstreet Boys; it’s a toe-tapping, feel-good evening with a lot of heart.

There’s no denying the shows bones are solid. Max Martin and David Read’s book is witty, fast-paced and delivers some brilliant one-liners, with music that makes you giggle and simultaneously sends shivers down your spine. The band is bouncy and bass-heavy supporting this wildly talented cast as they raise the roof of the New Wimbledon Theatre.
Gerardine Sacdalan is punchy, pitch-perfect Juliet. She plays both the wounded fragile ingenue (of only 14… or 20?) and a woman on a quest to find her voice in a world written by men – most namely, William Shakespeare.

Shakespeare is played by Jay McGuiness, who undeniably brings swagger to the role but falls short at the feet of the astounding woman who vocally outshine him at every turn. A statement which is true for most (but not all) men in this production. Kyle Cox is a good, believable François, who holds his own vocally, but falls short in his chemistry with Jordan Broatch (May). Broatch is a wonderful actor and vocalist whose quiet disposition draws the audience in.

Ranj Singh is a funny and loveable Lance whose excellent chemistry with Sandra Marvin (Angeliqué) provides the perfect subplot. He is, however, outdone by Marvin’s portrayal of Angeliqué – her humour and heart shine. Romeo is covered by Liam Morris who does excellently to step into the role at the last minute but seems less confident than his colleagues, and perhaps not as vocally prepared for the role.

The night belongs to Lara Denning as the incomparable, gutsy, complex and fierce Anne Hathaway (the original). In this role Denning brings heart, comedy, tragedy and nuances that capture the audience and have us eating out of the palm of her hand. Her powerhouse vocals match her brilliant acting ability, and her superb dance skills.

The entire cast is supported by a brilliant ensemble of players – all of whom shine individually and as a unit. They are energized; hitting every move, every note, every accent with glorious detail – their skills build this world and help the audience fall in love with it.

& Juliet is the perfect night out – and a jukebox musical that works. It is everything should be and more!
