Following on from an Edinburgh Festival success the production follows best friends and flatmates Liz and Mary; one a musician and one a spoken word performer.
This depiction of female friendship is written and performed by MisMatch a talented new duo made up of Megan Keaveny (Liz) and Ellie Campbell (Mary) in co-production with So La Fair Theatre.
Ellie Campbell is loud, and brash and commands the room. Her comic timing is spot on and her tales in pursuit of materials for her poetry are outrageously funny.
Megan Keaveny’s Liz is a talented songwriter recovering from a recent trauma. She is quieter, less sure but with a wicked, dry sense of humour. They joke over toilet paper and overhear each other having sex.
Maya Heritage’s stage set is minimal yet transforms from the pub stage to the morning-after bedroom/bathroom. The set design deserves a star to itself with the clever use of drawers to incorporate a basin and toilet pan, swiftly put away to transmute to open the mike again.
The first half of the show is hilariously funny with clever, intelligent quips and insights into what it is to be a 20-something, feminist and sexually active female in today’s society.
In the latter part of the show an attempt is made to explore the ethics around using another’s trauma in your performance. Sadly, at this point it becomes slightly disjointed, and the big reveal feels forced.
Is This Things On? Presents a heartwarming tale of two friends coming to grips with living together and finding their place in the world.
MissMatch and So La Flair are ones to watch in the future.
