As a magic sceptic, I am not instantly drawn to believing in the wonders of magic. However, I do like being entertained and left questioning “How on earth did they do that?”. Kevin Quantum is a magician/illusionist who has never failed to impress me. Jamie Allan has the same personable and intriguing qualities as Quantum and strictly refers to himself as a magician.

AMAZE is exactly what Allan achieved as the audience is drawn into his story and lives it alongside him for the two-hour show. What you take with you after the show will be different for everyone. For me, it’s the brilliant stage effects and lighting by James Perrett and Tommy Bond.

There is a certain amount of audience participation throughout the show but it’s down to personal choice if you wish to join Allan on stage although everyone who joined him appeared to enjoy the experience. Personally, it’s not something I ever want to do.

Allan has a soft presentation tone and offers a calm and beguiling approach when he is delivering his magic and for some of the tricks, he explains partly about what he is doing although I dare say it is all part of the act. The reception he received from the children in the auditorium proved that this approach worked well and they all appeared to engage with him.

AMAZE offers the audience insight into his life with a lovely montage of family photographs and stories about his childhood growing up in a public house with his parents, who were singers. I thought that AMAZE is partly a tribute show to his parents although neither of them will ever have the pleasure of watching Allan on stage as they are no longer alive.
