Play On! Is billed as a musical riff set to the Shakespeare’s Twelth Night storyline and set in 1940s Harlem. Where the Jazz scene is thriving. Apparently the only people that know how to write top Jazz music are the men. Can Viola (Tsemaye Bob-Egbe) who appears on the scene under the alias Vyman change these attitudes
The outstanding quality of the five-piece band brought the storyline to life. Their expertise and flawless rhythm consist of Ashton Moore on keys, Chirs Hyde on double bass, Alexander Polack on trumpet, Kaz Hamilton on sax, clarinet and flute and Shane Forbes on drums. The harmonies and beauty of jazz/blues filled the auditorium. Setting the musicians centre stage on a platform allowed the orchestra to be moved forward when required during the performance.

Koko Alexandra certainly knows how to put the “D” in Diva in the fabulous role of Lady Liv, who is desperately being pursued by The Duke (Earl Gregory) whose songwriting rhythm has dried up and he just wants to find the lyrics to catch Lady Liv and win her heart! The path of true love never runs smoothly and Play On! keeps that tradition alive.

Each of the main characters is rounded and there’s a broad range of attitudes from the 1940s which show a misogynistic slant on occasions. However, the balance of talents and casting choices didn’t support that opinion. The lead female roles were all strong and determined characters in their own right.
J Clare Productions has an accolade of award-winning Productions to their name. I believe Play On! Will be one joining the list as its vibrant, entertaining, and charming musical brings audiences a taste of the 1940s Harlem Jazz scene from TAWALA the Black British Theatre Company thrives to bring black excellence in theatre, which they have certainly achieved here.

Play On! Offers an uplifting and entertaining musical night at the theatre. Even though I was not familiar with any of the songs it didn’t stop me from tapping my foot along to some of the numbers and having a great night out.
