KIDULTS! The Musical is designed to take the audience on a journey back to their school days. Each of the characters represents a cross-section of people who we would recognise and could have gone to school with.
From the “smelly child” to the school bullies along with their unfortunate victims. Every single child has a reason why they have been shaped the way they are and family values and problems have a knock-on effect. From pushy parents to abusive parents nobody knows the backstory that each child has before they arrive at school.
Set to an original set of twenty-four musical numbers the lyrics were written by Tunstall and Lulu Chan and various artists wrote the musical score. They are a few catchy numbers but sadly not particularly memorable.
The Musical has plenty of scope to be a fun and engaging show. However, it lacks strength at times in delivering the insights and message that the Musical is attempting to put across. I would strongly encourage the team to sort out the cast’s microphones as it was hit-and-miss if they worked and I missed some of their dialogue.
The Bridewell Theatre is one of the larger Off West End Theatres and a large section of the left-hand side stage was underutilised which meant that the large cast was unnecessarily cramped at times when they all performed together. The cast worked incredibly hard throughout though and appeared to be enjoying themselves.
Writing any new production for Theatre has plenty of challenges and when you have been working closely with a text it’s hard to know sometimes what works and what doesn’t. KIDULTS! The Musical requires plenty of editing and reducing the run time to two hours including an interval. Keeping in the insights and removing a couple of the characters which brought very little depth to the storyline.
I truly wanted to like this musical as it sounded really good fun on paper. I think it still has the potential to achieve this. In its current format, it has sadly fallen flat.
