Family magic show Grow Up Magic Man written and performed by Tom Bolton. Has been a show influenced by his own experiences growing up. The stage setting is based on a younger Tom’s bedroom layout. Influenced by Derren Brown from an early age he understands the importance of capturing young minds to take an interest in magic.
For many of the tricks, performed there’s a degree of audience participation and interaction throughout the show, after all Bolton wants you to enjoy the show and feel that you have also been touched by the magic. He tends to try and nurture the shyer members of the audience and puts them at ease, and invites them to join him and they are soon taking part.
I especially liked the trick where he asked for a parent and child to join him on stage. The trick is specially designed around the bond the look of sheer bewilderment and joy on their faces at the end spoke volumes.
Bolton’s friendly charisma and charm engage with the entire family throughout the performance. The interactive trick using the Cluedo board game has been very cleverly structured and it will have the audience thinking about whodunit. There has to remain an air of mystery around magic but as Bolton proves if you build up trust with an audience they will believe in you and your magic.
Although this was Bolton’s debut at the Edinburgh Fringe I am sure it will not be his last and in time will build a following other magicians like Kevin Quantum and Ben Hart now have.
