Mhairi Black-Politics Isn’t For Me.

Mhairi Black stood down in the 2024 general election after a decade as MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire and former deputy Leader of the Scottish National Party. In her Edinburgh Fringe debut stand-up show Politics Isn’t For Me she opens up about some of the mysterious voting rules instead Westminster.

Black hasn’t long been diagnosed with ADHD and kept it quiet while she was working as MP, probably the best idea. Especially as she explains the lack of support she had during a difficult period as an MP.

Personally, I am quite nosey and the idea of the in-house voting system, the seating arrangements inside the House of Commons and Black explaining the truth behind the alleged “cocaine” explosion on Twitter interested my curiosity. As an ex-MP, it’s only logical to expect some of the inside gossip to be part of the show.

At 29 years old she has had an incredibly successful career in politics and achieved many things. However, if this stand-up show is anything to go by she has a very promising career as a comedian. Where she will not have to hide in the toilets to get a result (you need to see the show to understand).

I came away from the show seeing another side to Black, a funny, charismatic and straight-talking ex-MP where the world of politics has lost a rare commodity inside that ancient building “held up” by a facade of Eton graduates who weren’t in touch with the real world. Let’s see what the new generation of Politicians can do!

Politics Isn’t For Me is a brilliant debut show. Now Black has covered the political side I would like to see her natural comedian side develop and grow as there is a natural performer ready to hit the comedy scene.
