Australian musical comedian Darby James brought his cabaret Little Squirt to the Edinburgh Fringe. Where he openly explains how, where and why he donated his sperm. Following with his dilemma about adding to the population.
Darby takes the audience on a hilarious and heartfelt journey across the “choppy waters” of dealing with all the paperwork, counselling and physical donations which were navigated and explained with Darby’s gorgeous charm and charisma.
Darby’s uses a range of his original cabaret songs to guide you through his hilarious and heartfelt voyage, which had been originally ignited by a late-night scroll through Facebook adverts. Proof perhaps that Facebook adverts do reach potential customers!
The morals and thoughts behind becoming a sperm donor offer an insightful look at the DNA footprint that it leaves behind. It’s not a subject I have considered before and I left the show understanding far more about how the donors would perhaps feel about their role in the process.
Sperm donors and the clinics operating offer hope and the chance for people who otherwise for various reasons cannot conceive a child without the donors help. The thorough process sounded daunting but reassuring.
The conscientious thoughts and details put into the show and his decision to donate sperm suggest that Darby would make a wonderful parent in the future if he ever chose to have children of his own.
