Imagine the scene. John Lennon is waking up from a heavy night where he had been taking goodness knows what. Who should he wake up to see, no other than Vincent Van Gogh, who is innocently attempting to draw him? Whatever he had been using was still having an effect.
Murray Andrews and Nick Wilkes deliver intense and convincing performances in When Vincent Met John a purely fictional play where two great artists meet at crisis points in their lives and careers. The conversations that follow offer insight into their personalities.
John is fed up with people taking and wanting things from him. He cannot understand or believe that Vincent only wants to draw him and has no idea who John is. How can he not know who he is, everyone did!
Vincent being unaware of John’s worldwide fame is baffling to John. They both view each other as crazy and “not right in the head” which offers plenty of comedy throughout the play.
The encounter is a fascinating idea and the actors both look like their characters, whether Vincent sounded similar nobody will ever know.
From the moment the two actors began to converse I knew I was about to watch an exceptional play, there was a rapport that captured the essence of the two iconic artists and brought the meeting of minds together. It’s a meeting that you leave believing could have happened, yet know it was completely impossible to have done.
