Wish You Were Here written by Michael Johnson looks at relationships, life choices and drug and alcohol addiction. Brought to the Edinburgh Fringe by new Scottish theatre company Without Compromise Theatre the play focuses on the damage these do to people’s lives and the struggle to remain clean once you have stopped taking drugs.
Set in a small town in Fufe Wish You Were Here is a story about a group of friends who get together again after three years at a party. Their lives have changed and their outlooks and hopes for the future now are different. Can they overcome these and remain friends?
The writing has plenty to offer the audience. The characters are dealing with separate demons and life choices. The manipulation used and volatile behaviour of the drug dealer were explosive and hard-hitting as the switch between reasonable to dangerous was flipped in an instant.
For the first play by Wish You Were Here Theatre company at the Edinburgh Fringe they have taken on challenging roles which deserve to be developed and progressed further.
However, the space in which the play was performed didn’t allow the cast enough space to express the fighting and arguments to their full potential. I’d like to see the play performed with a set and edited to sharpen up the impact of the intense storyline.
A play with much potential and deals with hard-hitting issues that affect thousands of people’s lives daily and are often unseen and unheard.
