Yola Jean Lu

Help! My Virgina is trying to kill me! Is an honest solo show where Yola Jean Lu describes what it’s like to have contracted genital herpes from an older man who she naively trusted and the hostility she received from him after she was diagnosed.

Yola also discusses her miscarriage and the removal of cells after a positive HPV diagnosis, which sounds incredibly painful. HPV only started being routinely tested as part of routine smear tests in the UK in 2016 and has helped save many women from developing cervical cancer.

The subject of being “fat-shamed” is discussed too. The shaming didn’t come from strangers being cruel to Yola it came from her Mother, which is very common. Destroying part of her self-esteem and confidence. The performance is part of her therapy journey as Yola has learnt to love herself and accept herself for who she is.

The solo show opens up discussions afterwards and Yola is happy to talk to the audience afterwards and as part of the show tells you some of the stories women have shared with her as a result of watching this.

Plays and shows like these are honest accounts of what happens to thousands upon thousands of women every day who will not always want to share their stories for various reasons. Especially genital herpes as there’s a stigma and embarrassment surrounding the condition.

If you are affected by any of the topics discussed in this review I have added some links below where you can find out more about the conditions.
