DINNER offers a dark comedy hosted by Paige whose aim (apparently) is to have friends around for dinner and celebrate her husband’s new book release. Every attention to detail has been laid out on the dining table centre stage. An impressive stage setting for a Fringe Theatre production considering the fast changeovers between shows.

However, Paige has other plans and has plotted everything out to the finest detail. Where affairs of the heart and suspected infidelity arise it doesn’t take long for the celebrations to turn sour. Especially when the food starts to be served. A menu of waste bin leftovers and algae soup that could potentially kill the dinner guests.

The waiter plays a very good role throughout the play and never falters from his job and will only listen to Paige’s instructions but for the large fee he is being paid, it is no surprise. He has a very intimidating stare that he gives to the guests and certainly knows what he has to do next.

The characters are rounded and apart from the stranger who turns up after crashing into their gate, they are all people that you definitely wouldn’t want to spend an evening with, especially with a menu like that on the table. You’re never quite sure whether the stranger is telling the truth or not but he would be intriguing to talk to further. The play has plenty of twists and turns throughout the storyline and you are never sure what will happen next.

My only criticism about the play is the ending doesn’t appear to be properly executed and the cast seemed to be confused about who was supposed to be where and it felt “messy” Up to that point it had been very well staged.
