Flat 2 is the debut play by Lucy Foley who set up “From the Middle Theatre Company” alongside Natalie Evans, the play’s director. Set behind closed doors in Flat number 2 where Ava and Freddie haven’t longed to move in with their perspective partners and there’s still a collection of boxes left to unpack and sort through.
However, after a drunken night out Ava and Freddie are left trying to understand what has just happened to their worlds and make sense of why their partners have died in a road accident. Before they can make any big decisions the funerals need to take place first.
Such an unusual and devastating situation for the pair to find themselves in. The play addresses many issues surrounding grief for example how soon should you get back to work? When is it the right time to sort out their things? And the most important decision is whether it is too early to order pizza.
Ava and Billie (Freddie’s girlfriend) have been friends for a very long time. We discover Billie was far from the model girlfriend and had rather a colourful history where relationships were concerned. However, we don’t learn very much about Stefan (Ava’s boyfriend) which I would have liked to have known.
The couple are left with many decisions and the storyline tackles how they cope moving forward. Neither of them knows what they should be doing and takes very different paths as they attempt to process their grief.
