Menagerie has nothing to do with owning animals. It’s the daily routine and Menagerie of duties and responsibilities faced daily, choices and decisions that fit into our lifestyle.
Anu Vaidyanathan’s life has been incredibly interesting and varied. Breaking any misconceptions about how families in parts of India fathers treat their daughters. Equality is important to them and daughters are encouraged. Menagerie puts a microscope on the highs and lows of Anu’s career and her impressive catalogue of qualifications.
Uniting her head and heart along with her career and parenting, proves to be more of a challenge than it appears on the surface. Especially when her son draws a family picture including an aeroplane which “Mummy” uses a lot! It’s a situation many working women face today regardless of race or religion this picture speaks to everyone who has been or is in that situation.
After an incredibly horrific attack, Anu feels that she can no longer see some of her family or forgive what they witnessed and passively allow it to happen. Once you start to step away from the nurturing side of the family ties you begin a journey similar to Anu where you have to make difficult choices and decisions for your mental health.
An honest and heartfelt insight into Anu’s life and partly therapy as she exposes part of herself to the outside world, a very brave and positive move towards healing for a brighter future.
Anu will be performing Menagerie directly after her comedy show BC:AD – Before Children, After Diapers (15.40 – 16.40) in the same venue.
Three Stars.
