Sam Lake has brought his new comedy solo show Esméralda to the Edinburgh Fringe or was it Wembley, I couldn’t be sure! A show dedicated predominantly to his late Mum and finally “coming out as Spanish”. This isn’t a depressing reflective show consumed with grief. It’s a tribute laced beautifully with comedy from a “happy place” in Sam’s life where he shares the last moments he spent with his Mum.
Lake has the audience in his hands from the opening of the show with his quick-witted humour along with the sharp turning punchlines leave the audience caught between laughing and uncomfortable chair shuffling which adds to the comedy.
With Lake, you can always expect the unexpected. Which is all part of his likeable and charismatic charm. Who has an honest and open outlook on everything that life has thrown at him over the years and blends it into his own unique comedy blend.
If you are intrigued to find out who Esméralda is then I highly recommend spending an hour of your fringe in Lake’s charming company. I am not about to start divulging any spoilers, for an hour’s comedy at the Edinburgh Fringe this is a must-see show.
