Jake Mace performs the solo show Deeptime Atomic Waste Pleasure Party in the role of Rey a queer hedonistic partygoer who lives for the nightlife. Partying hard and attempting to make sense of what is happening to the world around them and the friendship groups and relationships that are forming quickly around Rey, you are left wondering what is real and what remnants are left over from the night before.
“This is not the place” is reiterated throughout the play as Rey battles on through a haze of drugs and alcohol. Are they hearing this or is it a drug-induced voice in their head playing tricks on him? Will he ever find the right place to Bury the nuclear waste?
Set to a soundtrack from the 1980s when the threat of nuclear weapons and waste were in the headlines and part of everyday conversations. Although the subject isn’t as often in the news it’s still very much part of lives and dealing with the waste is a serious business, one wrong move and it’s a catastrophe.
Rey describes the scenes and club scenes with vivid accuracy to some of the “seedy” venues many teenagers try as they are growing up and first experience the pumping music and lights of club life. Mace’s description picks you up and takes you with him as he spirals down the rabbit holes into the next scene.
What happens to the buried nuclear waste? What is going to happen in the future? Rey now lives in a world where if you are not carrying a Geiger counter you can get into serious trouble, you need one to get into the clubs that they frequent. Radiation is all around them and without the Geiger count you can’t be sure exactly what is safe around you.
