Arriving at a clearing three friends decide that they have found a reasonable spot to set up their camp for the night and begin to make it comfortable. However, one of the friends has lost or misplaced their tent along with a bag containing their camping staple (alcohol). Nothing is quite going to plan in Birdwatching.
Lauren (Ellen Trevaskiss), Amelia (Mimi Millmore), and Poppy (Madeline Farnhill) appear to be an unlikely group of friends, and as the forgotten items are acknowledged and admitted to the tension and arguments begin and become intense at times. The who likes who and who doesn’t like who bickering! The typical conversations that take place between groups of friends. Birdwatching is about to test their friendship without a bird insight or is there?
However, Poppy begins to explain more about the area that they are camping in and the mystery and rumours surrounding it told to her by her Grandad, who used to take many solo camping trips. Lauren and Amelia are spooked out and their senses as it gets darker become heightened very fast and you can feel the fear and tension building.
It doesn’t take long for the three friends to begin questioning whether the sounds they can hear around them are just birds and the trees moving or something much more sinister watching them and deliberating what to do next. Do they run or stay?
The tension in the auditorium builds up as the woodland noises and sounds envelop the audience leaving you looking around to check if you are being watched or not! I was so pleased that this performance is in the morning as I would not want to be walking home in the dark after watching Birdwatching.
Black Bright Theatre are also raising money and awareness Strut Safe, a UK-wide phone line for anyone who’s walking alone and feels uncomfortable. You will find a link to them below.
