Anu Vaidyanathan’s comedy show BC AD Before Children After Diapers explores comedy through the eyes of comedian Anu. Her take on life as a Muslim woman, wife and mother whose achievements are outstanding. Anu trained and worked as an Engineer and she holds the distinction of being the first Asian woman to compete at the Ultraman Canada and Ironman Canada in 2009.
With additional short film-maker credits to her name, she has brought her comedy show to Edinburgh to try out the Fringe audiences. This particular show was a personal experience. Without any additional ticket sales, Anu spoke to me beforehand about coming another day when there were more people in. However, my schedule is tight so we agreed that the show would go on just the two of us and the technician.
Having lived in different countries Anu has a large breadth of multicultural humour, the treatment she received at a couple of airports is appallingly yet Anu takes the behaviour and ridiculous questions she has been asked at that time and creates humour. Guess these unpleasant authoritarian guards would be horrified to now be the punchline of Anu’s joke. Which in my opinion, is no more than they deserved. However, some of the American references were lost on me as I have never lived there.
Edinburgh Fringe is unpredictable every single day. Shows can sell out one day and struggle to find one the following. This wasn’t anything to do with the quality of Anu’s comedy and commentary on life. The missing audience on the day lost out on an entertaining and interesting show.
Anu loves her children, husband and family. It’s simply a bonus that they offer a great amount of comedy material for her to use and reflect upon in her work. If you’re looking for a bit of comedy this Fringe please check out this show.
