Molly performed by Emma Smart takes you on a journey through her life. Middle aged and now going through the dreaded Me-No-Pause as Molly pronounces it the HRT patches are offering some relief to the hot flushes although the gin bottle helps a bit too.
Alarm bells ring as her future husband Frank, who is in his mid-twenties picks up sixteen-year-old Molly in the pub after she is refused service. Molly describes their first meeting in the tone of her giggly sixteen-year-old self. Her description of him describes a predatory man who should be avoided at all costs. However, to a naive sixteen year old he appeared to be an absolute “catch” and a “perfect” husband.
For anyone with first-hand experience of bringing up children when they reach the of sixteen knows that they are like encyclopedias and sadly in many cases need to learn life the hard way. As, sadly Molly then goes on to do. By eighteen her daughter is born and the life Frank promised her is fading into the distance.
Smart offers an honest and heartfelt insight into a situation familiar to many women who have become trapped in domestic violence relationships and become desperate to escape. The physical movement performed by Smart during certain scenes of immense brutality is brilliantly portrayed. Definitely a show to try and catch during the Fringe.
