On the evening of his 60th Birthday, George Wickham has been from the marital bed chamber due to “another” flirtatious misdemeanour at his Birthday party. Where Mre Wickham must have “read more into the situation ” than it was!

Adrian Lukis’s solo performance of his production Being Mr Wickham is an account of the life Wickham lived within the pages of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Wickham retells the accounts of some of his ill-judged romantic liaisons,  his banishment to an all-boys boarding school on The Moors to his relationship with the infamous Mr Darcy.

Some of the accounts of what took place within the grounds of the all-boys school are never explained in full detail.  The retelling of what he witnessed and was subjected to is enough to make you wince and feel uncomfortable.

After playing the role in the BBC television series Pride and Prejudice of Mr Wickham, Lukis thoroughly enjoyed playing the character and decided to develop the solo performance and give George Wickham a new lease of life. Performing on Off-Broadway in 2023 to an array of positive reviews.

Staging is designed by Libby Watson to be the private area in Wickham’s House where he can peacefully enjoy a decanted bottle of red, observe the nightly comings and goings of his neighbours young daughter and reflect on a life he has lived to the maximum.

Prior knowledge of the characters and storyline of Mr Wickham in Pride and Prejudice does help. As he discusses his relationship with Mr Darcy and The Bennett family. However, audiences can follow the storyline without reading the book or watching the television series first.

Being Mr Wickham offers an intimate and enjoyable sixty minutes of Theatre and is a must-see for all Jane Austen fans. Lukis keeps Wickham alive to retell his life and conquests once more.
