New Victoria Theatre in Woking is the current home of 2.22 A Ghost Story which has now left the West End and is making a country tour with their latest cast production. Last night’s press night performed to an almost sold auditorium and seemed to have the audience on the edge of their seats.

Jenny (Fiona Wade) and Sam (George Rainsford) have recently started extensive renovations on their forever home. After purchasing the property from the original elderly owners at a good price they’ve promised the widow that they will look after the house and treasure it. However, since starting some major renovations ghostly and unexplained events have started taking place. The couple appears to have different ideas on what tasteful renovations look like.

Sam’s University friend Lauren (Vera Chok) and her latest boyfriend Ben (Jay McGuinness) come round for dinner. Lauren hasn’t met the couple’s baby yet and is looking forward to catching up with her old friend. As the events become weirder Ben admits to having medium powers and attempts are made to reach the other side! However, this is all I am willing to divulge.
The stage designed by set designer Anna Fleischle offers a fantastic platform where the audience can see parts of the original features and wallpaper against the “improvements” which are taking shape. The outlines of the photographs which once hung on the old-fashioned wallpaper gave a glimpse into the life the house once lived.

The red lights which flash on around the stage each time a scene change takes place happen without warning and the auditorium is stunned and unable to make out what is taking place on stage. Offering a effective way to build up tension within the auditorium. As the gasps I heard echoed these observations.
Director Matthew Dunster and Isabel Marr have brought to the stage a modern-day “Ghost Story” that will keep you on the edge of your seats until the final curtain falls. It’s certainly a good night out at the Theatre.
