Crime and Comedy Theatre Company presents The Hound Of The Baskervilles produced by Kate Ashmead. The settings are London, Devonshire and Dartmoor as the cast takes to the airwaves to record a radio play version of the famous Arthur Conan Doyle novel live on air. Listen closely as the mysterious crime unfolds before you.
Famous for his role as the Doctor in BBC’s Doctor Who, Colin Baker now takes on the role of Conan Doyle’s famous detective Sherlock Holmes as he sets about solving the mystery of The Hound Of The Baskervilles. Alongside Terry Malloy in the role of his long-term partner “in crime” Doctor John Watson.

The current touring production has three different actors playing the role of Laura Lyons, tonight in Winchester we saw Nicola Bryant take to the stage in the role, along with a couple of minor roles added in.
Complete with a sound effects department positioned on the left-hand side of the stage. We can hear the horses approaching or leaving by the familiar sound of coconut shell horseshoes to the tombola-spun wind effects, allowing the stormy scenes on the moors to take shape.

It’s not often that you will find plays performed in this style, yet it can be effective if you are willing to suspend your disbelief and use your imagination when required. Especially during some of the descriptive parts of the play like the encounter with the Baskerville Hound, I found closing my eyes and visualising the images described. My thoughts then took centre stage, while listening to the cast and allowed me to add another dimension to the play. Definitely something I would recommend trying.
