The famous escapologist Harry Houdini is under pressure to clear his name after being framed for murder. Using all the tricks and tools of his trade in the New Old Friends play Houdini’s Greatest Escape with some magic added to the mix. Will this be enough to clear his name in time to allow him to perform in front of the King?

Ben Higgins takes to the stage as Harry Houdini alongside Lydia Piechowiak in the role of his wife Bess Houdini. In a race against time the couple set out to find the answers and defend themselves against Ma Barkers (Kirsty Cox) accusations. Even if this means briefly joining the circus!

With more than ten separate characters throughout the performance by Adam Elliott performs an outstanding one-man scene where he embarks on four separate characters. From the newspaper seller, the Scottish couple and the well-to-do upper-class gent. The scene flows quickly and flawlessly followed by a huge round of applause.

The play incorporates the original Houdini’s dislike and scepticism for the world of spiritualism. The thought of medium spiritualist Agatha performing in his place in front of the King drives the pair to get the answers they need.

The plot is fast-paced, funny and cleverly delivered. Like all good whodunnits, it isn’t always clear why characters behave in a certain way until all is revealed at the end. Another successful production by the outstanding Theatre company New Old Friends, where their twist on traditional theatre plays is definitely one to check out.
