Writer Jaisal Marmion gives a solo performance as Liam from Skibbereen in Ireland in the fast-paced play Boy In Da Korma. A 17-year-old lad who thinks he is the reincarnation of the legendary rapper Tupak Shakur who was murdered in Los Angeles in 1997 and attempts to prove this at any given opportunity.
Liam’s Mum is a local from the Cork town where they live and his father was Indian. Being brought up in a single-parent household has thrown up challenges for Liam although not as many as he has faced being half-Indian! Gives plenty of reasons for the local bully, Shane to take pleasure in harassing Liam at any opportunity. Resulting him in being given the nickname “2Paki”!
Marmion presents a funny yet moving study of someone who simply wants to fit in amongst his peers and be accepted. Despite all the despicable racism he has faced, he constantly dreams of one day having a successful rapping career and finally finding his place in a cruel and hostile world.
Liam despite everything thrown at him is a likeable character who you sincerely would like to see become a successful rapper and fulfil his dreams. His childhood has certainly made him strong enough to deal with the inevitable hurdles he would face on his way to the top.
Boy In Da Korma has been part of the Jermyn Street Theatre Footprints and has now finished its run there. However, I think this might not be the last outing for this play. If you see it advertised in the future it is definitely worth going to watch.
