Southbank Centre is the chosen place to set up home by the play The House with Chicken Legs based on the novel by Sophie Anderson and Adapted by Oliver Lansley. Running from 13th-30th December 2023.

Twelve-year-old Marinka (Eve De Leon Allen) lives with her Grandmother Baba Yoga (Lisa Howard). Although she’s very happy with her Grandmother, living in a house that walks to a new destination when they are asleep can become tiresome. However, as the story develops we understand why Marinka is overly protected by Baba and the destiny that has already been mapped out for her.

Baba Yoga’s character is rooted in folklore. She’s there to offer a safe passage for the recent deceased through the aid of Baba asking them about their happy thoughts before sending them on to the next life through the house’s portal.

Les Enfants Terribles are renowned for their puppetry and live music skills. The company certainly doesn’t fail to deliver with the production of The House with Chicken Legs each cast member performs with a selection of instruments, and songs and the Jackdaw puppetry performed by Dan Willis is wonderful. Each time the Jackdaw takes flight you are immersed in the bird’s journey and role in the play.

Set designer Jasmine Swan and video designer Nina Dunn have worked together to bring the stage to life. Incorporating the changing backdrops each time the house grew legs and moved to a new destination. Dunn’s nighttime scenes especially, including some shooting stars, are breathtaking.

With an exceptionally strong cast, The House with Chicken Legs offers a captivating and incredible visual adaptation of the thought-provoking novel. The lighting, designers, and entire production team have created a play that deserves a West End venue with a longer run.
