Jeffrey Bernard is unwell

Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell an immersive Theatre performance/experience performed by Robert Bathurst. Sat in The Coach and Horses in Greek Street, Soho the audience fully immerses into the story of the turbulent life of the late flawed, yet unashamedly honest journalist. Regular readers of his column would often find that it said he was “unwell” after failing to write an article or meet a deadline due to too much of a good thing the night before!

The infamous life of journalist, Jeffrey Bernard finds himself locked inside The Coach and Horses pub, one he notoriously frequented daily. Bathurst crashes into the bar after waking up after he had fallen asleep in the toilet in yet another “normal” drunken state.

Bernard attempts to phone the pub landlord, Balon on several occasions to let him know he is locked in and would like to be let out, well (possibly) as he is quite happily tackling the contents of the vodka bottle as he relives some of his past highlights. From his relationship with Lester Pigott (jockey) to his trail of disastrous marriages.

The intimacy of the pub setting makes for a fascinating insight with historical providence into the life of Bernard. Bathurst’s performance offers insight with affection and humour into his life which I dare say very few would want to live. Especially the daily damage it will have done to his body.

Writer Keith Waterhouse offers a taste of the late Soho legend to an audience (like myself) who haven’t heard of him before. It’s these characters who shaped the past in journalism and deserve to be remembered.
