Writer and performer Ben Noble brings MEMBER to the stage for the EdinburghFringe 2023. A fictional story based on the gay hate crime epidemic between 1970-90’s in Sydney Australia resulting in 80 murders and a further 30 unsolved cases.
Corey (Ben Noble) relives parts of his childhood where he was pressured into taking part in attacks and murders against gay men by his brother and other men. The bait was laid and the “pack” of so-called good citizens then set about ridding the area of these men, whom they despised only on the grounds of sexuality.
A sickening story that left me cold due to the details Noble described. Each punch, kick and final blow was delivered with a sense of glee that they were doing “what was best” for the area they lived in and the world would now be a better place!

Cellist Simone Seales is outstanding there timings were incredible and I observed there foot controlling the sound box throughout the performance. Rarely looking away from a concentration point in the theatre. Each touch and sound is in perfect timing with Noble’s performance.
Even without a storyline, the performance of the couple alone is a work of art and perfection. Impeccably timed on the one occasion Seales abruptly stopped Noble you could see how stunned the audience was too.
A gruesome part of Australian history that I had no idea about. Stopping in the 1990s it is still a fairly recent historical event which shocks and disgusts me.
