Since the “birth” of the contraception pill the sexual freedom and liberation for females have changed dramatically. Women have had more control over when they would like to start having children as long as nature agrees.
What happens when women decide that they don’t want a family and have endured horrendous periods long enough? Why can’t they have the option to have a hysterectomy, it’s their body and choice after all!
Hersterectomy explores the quest of Carmel, a lesbian who has decided she doesn’t want to have children and is desperately trying to convince her Doctor that she should agree to allow her to have the operation. To do this she decides to put together a fake family and invite the Doctor round for dinner. What could go wrong?
Its an unethical farce in so much as inviting your Doctor around to intentionally “sway” their decision for your operation would be frowned upon. As it turns out the Doctor already knows the son and his “real” Mother. However, it does pose an important question about how much say should a woman have over her own body and the choice to have a hysterectomy.
Billed as a Musical comedy it’s an extremely chaotic and funny farce where you want Carmel to eventually be allowed to make that important decision. Although in reality, I don’t think the overstretched NHS would cope with an increase in requests.
If this musical comedy is playing at a Theatre near you check it out. The company have researched the subject thoroughly and there’s a comprehensive timeline about the history of the pill, good and bad.
