Richard Dale is now Awake, Gay and Writing a Play having removed himself from the Jehovah’s Witnesses religion and sadly his family too. He chooses life and Freedom over the restraints and suppression he had been forced to live.
Standing trial on charges of being gay by what appears to be self-appointed elders in the Jehovah’s Witnesses religion with very little understanding of the outside world and this appears to be justified and cruel from an outsider’s position. How can you judge someone for who they choose to be attracted to.
Their view of us “sinners” is one of salvation. We all need saving before the end of the world takes place. This is why they visit house to house making notes on us and trying to persuade us to join them in their quest for a sin-free life.
Dale gives the audience an insight into how his treated and what religion expected from him when he was performing his duties. His family didn’t join until he was 8 years old and his father never took part in the religion and as a consequence had been deemed evil.
Anyone giving up their role or faith as a Jehovah’s Witness loses more than a religion all the friends and family members within the congregation no longer talk to them and cut them off as if they had died. A cruel way to behave from many outside the religion.
Dale is very likable and no longer wishes to try and convert you, just entertain.
