Get ready to go on a journey in the one-woman performance Spin Cycle by Jamie-lee Money. Drawn into the heady culture-like world of Spin Classes, which sounds like my idea of a nightmare with rows and rows of static Spin bikes and a class leader shouting instructions. Great exercise and adrenaline rush for those who enjoy fast-paced classes.
How do you overcome looking at your body daily and seeing the two ticking time bombs? The grief of losing her Mum to breast cancer and her editor’s ideas of research sends her off to attempt to exercise the grief away and feel fitter at the same time.
Spinning classes have grown in popularity over the past few years. Throughout the performance, Jamie-Lee pedals As if she is in one of the exercise classes. The stamina maintained is amazing and there wasn’t a moment when she was out of breath or faulted in her delivery.
References to the London landscape might not be understood by all audience members. However, the descriptions add depth to the busy life Jamie-Lee leads and although the designer-branded clothing items referred to don’t mean anything to me they add to the importance of the image she is swept up in with her jobs position.
The openness and honesty of her feelings towards grief for breast cancer and her job make a compelling storyline that keeps you gripped throughout the performance as Jamie-lee spin cycles her way to the end.
